MTV is an American based cable and satellite tevelvison channel owned by the MTV Networks Music and Logo Group. The channel itself is headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. It launched in 1981, August 1st. In it's early years, MTV's main target demographic were young adults, but today MTV's programming is primarily targeted at adolescents and teenagers. Sale of MTV to Viacom international inc. In 1985 changed from its status as a percieved fad to that of a cultural instiution. It launchedin Europe in 1987 and went global for the first time.

 

Orinigal idea was to show music videos all day in stereo, in the US which gave advertisers to reach 12-34 YEAR OLD audience for album-prienetated rock.

 

MTV started showing primarily music videos and nothing else. However in the present day MTV now has 7 varies of their channel avaible. They had transformed their brand into a whole new experience. All music based programmes are now shown on the genre related channel.

 

MTV (formly M2) launched in 1998

MTV BASE launched in Europe in 1999

MTV CLASSIC (formly VH1 CLASSIC) launched in 1999

MTV HITS launched in 2002

MTV DANCE launched in 2001

MTV MUSIC (formly MTV SHOWS) launched in 2011.

 

Their main base channel 'MTV' now bases all showings on reality tv. Shows including:

 

Geordie Shore,

Jersey Shore,

Teen Mom,

The valleys,

Are you the one?,

Awkward,

Catfish and many more.

 

Even though moving into reality TV was a huge success for MTV, they are now slated incredibly for the abbusive and controversial shows, setting bad examples for their target audience of young teens and adolescents.

 

As of August 2013, approximately 97,654,000 American households recieve MTV.
